LRF Spinning Reels
For LRF and Japanese Light Game fishing styles most anglers opt for a spinning reel sized between 500 and 2000 (including 2500 and C3000). A small spinning reel filled with thin braid, fluorocarbon or ester line offers the light lure angler the easiest option to cast lightweight lures down to 0.5g. Look for a reel in your price range that isn’t too heavy and one with a smooth drag to protect light line from the power of large fish. The spinning reels listed here I have either owned, fished, or handled at various tackle shows.
Daiwa Certate LTD 2004 White
Here’s a beautiful and rare spinning reel that I feel lucky to own. The Certate LTD 2004 is a limited edition 2010 Certate. What sets it apart from the standard Certate 10 is the custom, white reel body, white Zaion knob and black metal parts.

With the current Japanese trend for hyper-light, 5 to 6ft light game fishing rods weighing in at under 60 grams, I couldn’t help but explore the options for a matching reel and try to answer the question, “what is the lightest spinning reel?”

Daiwa Luvias 15 1003 Custom
The Daiwa Luvias 15 range of reels are amongst my favourites and the baby 1003 model is just perfect for ultralight line applications. This Luvias 1003 was seen on the 34 stand at the 2018 Osaka Fishing Show, displaying the company’s rose pink Zerogra Double Handle III and Balancer III. Sweet ride.
Evergreen Opus-1 Nero Custom Shallow
