Back from another amazing time on the island of Alderney, fishing the 2013 Alderney Lure Only Species Hunt competition. It was, as expected, tremendous fun and has left me with the same empty feeling of unrequited love that I endured the last time I returned from fishing the incredible waters around Alderney. There is so much fishing to experience here. World class.

The 2013 Cornish Lure Festival – what a fantastic event!
July 5th saw myself and the other half set off early for Cornwall. With sunny weather and low winds forecast, it didn’t look perfect for the Bass comp but for me and the species hunting crew, it looked bloody perfect!

Lure only species hunts are a lot like buses. You wait for ages and then two come along at once!

Like lots of fellow anglers I like to keep a tally of species every year and I enjoy the challenge of seeking out a particular species to tick off the list. In the old days of bait-only fishing I would hit maybe 18-20 species a year, but now I mainly lure fish that total has risen year on year. Before any bait-boys get there bait elastic in a twist, this isn’t because fish all of a sudden like plastic more than food. It’s purely down to the fact I am fishing more.

With a widening gap between myself and the others fishing the Lure Heaven UK Species Hunt and the summer life draining out of the sea on a daily basis now, I headed west to Plymouth at the weekend to see how many ‘summer’ species I could tick off before they left our shores
Lure Heaven UK Species Hunt
Summer appears to be slipping away on the south coast, so I thought I better put in some effort for the Lure Heaven UK species hunt. Luckily the Corkwing are still in residence at pretty much every seaward mark we fish in Portsmouth – they won’t be for too much longer. Then a change of mark presented me with seemingly a sea of Black Goby but I did fluke out my first Dragonet of the year – good for the comp and my yearly species tally.
Species Hunt Competition
Lure Heaven UK, the modern lure distributor for brands including Graphiteleader, Bait Breath, Toray and Vanfook has announced a lure only species hunt with some great prizes including a Graphiteleader rod. The competition will run from September through December. It’s a great idea and I will be entering. More information can be found through this link
