A small but useful tip for using the Split Shot Rig. If you suffer from your split shot sliding out of place, thread a tiny section of rubber rig tube up the line before clamping the shot over it. The added friction generated by the rubber surface will keep the split shot in the desired position, but allow you to move it with a little bit of force. It also protects thin line from damage caused by sharp edges in the shot. I’ve used a few different brands. Look for silicone tube in the smallest diametre you can find.

Hi Adam. I had this issue recently where the split shot would not sit still on my fluoro leader. The leader is 4lb Sufix Super 21 – 0.14mm diameter. Have you managed to find silicone tube anywhere near this thin? Most I’ve seen (Korda etc.) seem to be 0.5mm at the smallest. Any pointers/brands would be appreciated as I suspect this will solve my issue – I don’t want to do what a lot of fly fishermen (using shot) seem to do and tie another knot to hold the shot where I want it. Cheers!

Hi John. It doesn’t need to be a tight fit as it gets squashed flat. 0.5 sounds smaller than what I use. I normally use the sea brands like Sakuma or Gemini but I think it’s all the same stuff. As long as it’s soft and can be compressed.
