Hi Adam,
I’ve just got some of these Large Grass Minnows, would you be able to talk me through which hook type and size and also which weight you have used etc as your setup looks just right.
Also is that a float stop you put in front of the weight or just a bead?
Cheers
Ben
Hi Ben. Thanks for your comments. So the setup in the picture is a 1/0 Decoy Kg Worm 17 Hook (barb flattened) with a 1g cone weight and a float stop.
1 or 1/0 is about right for the large Grass Minnow. For me, offset hook size is more about the gape of the hook. The lure you’re using needs to be able to clear right out the way of the hook point if you’re going to get anywhere near the hook up rate of fishing say, jighead.
You only really need 1 or 2g to fish the canal as it’s relatively shallow. I set up so the paddle tail swims itself on the drop. Retrieve speed also dictates weight choice. I’m fishing pretty low and slow with this.
There are lots of float stops or dedicated weight stops on the market. My advice is to go for a fairly large one as some cone weights have a fairly large bore.
Brilliant advice, just what I was after cheers. I’ve ordered some hooks etc now so hopefully test it out in the week, fishing them on jigheads for now. It’s hard to size up this stuff when mainly confined to purchasing it online.
Been inspired to try LRF the last couple of months by your blog, had some great sport on the local canal, biggest perch 2lb 4oz at 42cm, still looking for a 3 but getting lots of decent fish around 2lb.
