It was tough going yesterday, but with my favourite stretch of canal still well and truly open I wanted to christen a new LRF rod.

Texas Rig for Perch
Quiet on the Kennet and Avon Canal today. Managed these two Perch and stirred a couple of Pike. Fished Reins Bubbling Shads on a texas rig. Chartreuse was the best performing colour.

Hopefully it won’t take too much longer for the saltwater sport to pick up on the south coast. I did pop out tonight and got a few bites but nothing too exciting. Managed this tiny Black Goby and an equally tiny Pollock. But at least the 2013 tally has started finally.
Little Pike on LRF Gear
Braved the extreme cold today for 30 minutes while visiting Newbury. Wasn’t hopeful but I was gagging to try out some of my new lures. I fished a 3″ Reins Bubbling Shad in Marble Chart Orange, Texas with a 3.5g brass cone weight. Only managed a dozen casts before my hands froze but got a couple of follows from a decent trout and landed this little Pike. Great fun on the LRF gear. I will be back!
LRF St Malo
Managed a half-hearted LRF session in St Malo before catching the ferry back to Portsmouth. Tide and temperature were not on my side but I was determined to catch a fish, so set my sights high with a goby. Job done. Pretty ordinary Black Goby, but a great backdrop. Looking forward to returning one day for a proper go at it – look at all that structure!

Dan and I had the pleasure of fishing with Andy Ford today, on my local stretch of the Kennet and Avon. You may know Andy as the enthusiastic, roving reporter from ‘Tight Lines’ on Sky Sports. Spinning for Perch
Dan joined me for the last fishing of the year today and I’m pleased to say it was successful with us catching maybe twenty Perch between us. But what a contrast
