tackle and guns show
Shimano only ever has a small selection of its tackle at the trade show but these two spinning reels were stand out for me - the £400+ Shimano Vanquish and the £250+ Shimano Sustain. I actually prefer the look of the Sustain - that black colour scheme is pretty sick - but when you take a close look at the Vanquish you can see the extra quality the higher price tag gets you. The machining on the handle is very nice, as is the full metal rear housing. Black bail adds to the look. The Vanquish also features Shimano's new Light Weight Concept, using carefully selected materials to lighten the weight of the reel without sacrificing durability. Wish they'd had smaller sizes on show.
Really enjoyed listening to Dietmar Isaiasch on the Fox stand demonstrating the Fox Rage range of lure tackle. Dietmar is clearly a lure fishing veteran with many years experience fishing and designing lures. The stand featured a metal lure tank which was remarkable at highlighting the vibration and sound of different lures - much better than a plastic tank. Although I got the feeling that Dietmar predominantly fishes for freshwater predators he showed knowledge of fishing for 'sea bass' in Europe. I learned a couple of nice tips. More
Very interested to hear Dave Barham of Boat Fishing Magazine talking enthusiastically about LRF gear for use on the boat. I had heard about its use in the recent species tournament in Weymouth from another source and this confirms it. Exciting times!
It was good to see that Shimano has finally started designing spinning reels for the UK market with shallow spools for use with ultra thin braided lines - even if they haven't yet released smaller models suitable for light rock fishing. More
It was good to see a new Japanese LRF manufacturer's products being brought into the UK. George Cunningham of TronixPro is now distributing Viva AquaWave products including lures and jigheads. More
Star of the show for me was the Tronix Pro LRF rod. Although not a brand new item, it was the first time I have got to waggle and flex the little 0.5-7g rated, TronixPro HTO Rockfish UL. There's one rating that sets this rod apart from the masses of LRF rods now available - the price! More
