ballan wrasse

Ballan Wrasse are one of my favourite species of fish to target on the lure. The Ballan Wrasse is a real thug and bigger specimens will test your tackle and skill to the limit. They come in a huge array of beautiful colours – from brown to red, to green, to gold. Most often found around rock and weed, they can however turn up almost anywhere there is some structure for them to inhabit. Because of their environment we most often use weedless techniques to target Ballan Wrasse, limiting the odds of us getting snagged in their surroundings.

Dawlish LRF

Ballan Wrasse at Dawlish

With an extended bank holiday weekend and a decent forecast we jumped in the van and headed down the A303 to Devon, for a spot of camping. Dawlish Warren was our chosen destination and although this wasn’t a fishing trip, of course the lure rods came along too. Read more

LRF on Swanage Pier

Swanage Pier

What a cracking bank holiday Monday it was down in Dorset!

First of this year’s trips down to Swanage Pier and the first of the fish. It was clear that the Scorpos were back with a vengeance. Team Taylor (Mark and Sam) were into double figures by the time I got there. Young Sam was rinsing us. Well done Sam. Read more

Alderney 24 Hour Lure Only Species Hunt 2014

Dusk on Commercial Quay

The weather gods were not best pleased with the group of anglers that ventured out to fish the 2014 Alderney 24 Hour Lure Only Species Hunt. Strong easterly winds hampered everyone’s progress the whole weekend but did nothing to dampen everyone’s enthusiasm. Alderney has a lot to offer, even in tough conditions. Read more

Cornish Lure Festival 2014

Species Hunt Winners

It’s a week since the kick off of the 2014 Cornish Lure Festival and I have to say I’m not sure I’ve recovered yet – it was EPIC

After entering the Species Hunt competition for the first time last year, I’d managed to pass on my enthusiasm for the event to mates, Dan and Chris. Estelle enjoyed last year, even as a non-fisher, and was along for the ride again too. So with a rough plan built around the far from perfect forecast, and the two productive marks I’d garnered last year, we all met up in deepest, darkest Cornwall. Exciting! Read more
