What August’s Black Bream lack in average size they make up for in numbers. If you know where to look they are there in their hundreds. It’s a fun time of year to break out the LRF gear, jump on the boat and head out for some bream game in the sun. More

HTO Aikido 1000 Spinning Reel
I just spooled up a new HTO Aikido 1000 spinning reel with 0.2PE to give it a go at some Perch and LRF duties. It’s the first truly budget fixed spool reel (£45) that I haven’t immediately recoiled from. It’s a nice looking reel. The body has a Zaion-type vibe to it. The weight isn’t outrageous and I was pleasantly surprised by the smooth line-lay when spooling it up. Line capacity is 200m of 0.165mm (3lb mono). Here’s some more detailed images I took > More
Good For Species
Dan and I had a good day on the boat up East, chasing species on lures and artificials. Last count was 14 between us with the highlights being a Baillons for Dan and a Cuckoo Wrasse for myself. A boat Tompot is always pretty cool as well. More
More LRF Species In Portsmouth
With summer well and truly arrived, and the water temperature rising, it’s been good to see the species count rise to LRF methods. More
Hard Going
While the bigger fish targets have been pretty obliging since lockdown eased, the typical, smaller LRF species have felt a bit thin on the ground at times. Species count is going well, but the volume of fish doesn’t seem to be there yet. Perhaps that’s to do with mating duties. I caught a Corkwing last week that was still full of eggs (carefully released).
